Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 is a quick, abstract shooter featuring bright adversaries and bullets in a rectangle arena against a black background, just like the original. Six game variants with varying objectives are included in the game. After playing the preceding one for a set time, the various modes are gradually unlocked. Players in Deadline* have three minutes to score as many points as possible. This is accomplished by eliminating different waves of adversaries, each leaving germs that boost the score multiplier. The enemy ship has a limited number of bombs to clear the entire screen as well. Geoms are also used in most other game variants.

King is a more strategic game. Players can only shoot from randomly generated circle zones. Enemies cannot enter the zone, but they deteriorate over time, turning green and then red before no longer blocking the enemies. The player must then quickly travel to a new location, and opposing craft can only be evaded, not shot.

Evolved is a well-known game mode that features more traditional gameplay. Players are given four lives and three bombs to score as many points as possible. Extra energy and a bomb are provided for every 100,000 points. The following bonus is worth 10% of the initial value.

Pacifism is a defensive game mode in which the player cannot fire foes. Instead, they must be avoided and may only be killed by flying through randomly appearing gates that kill all-around competitors. The entrance constantly rotates, and the player cannot touch the yellow ends.

Waves revolve around fixed waves of orange attackers that appear like a big wall from the sides of the screen. The player must make space and avoid touch. Other opponents come but in fewer numbers.

The sequence is the final game mode, and it includes a total of twenty challenges. Players have 30 seconds to accomplish each challenge. When a life is lost or the timer runs out, the game advances to the next challenge until the players’ lives are depleted.

The latter iOS version has a new game mode called Titans, in which the ship must fight against super-sized adversaries who, upon death, unleash a swarm of smaller enemies of the same type. Offline cooperative and versus games for up to four players are available on the Xbox 360 edition.
