Gotham City Impostors is a multiplayer online shooter set in Gotham City, a fictitious DC comic world city best known as Batman’s hometown. Many superhero (or supervillain) impostors are at odds with one another; like Batman, they lack actual superpowers but rely on devices.
The combat is fast and action-packed, with three game types to choose from: team deathmatch, conquest, and a capture-the-flag version with special batteries (the variant is that each time a team brings a battery back, they are limited to melee attacks for a short time). As is typical for shooters released at the time, the player unlocks upgrades that can be utilized to strengthen their character. Weapons (the standard fare of a machine gun, shotgun, and rocket launcher), gadgets (e.g., roller skates that make the player very fast, a grappling hook, or double-jump shoes) that significantly change how the player moves through the levels, fun facts (permanent boni like more explosive damage), and items that only change the optical appearance are the four types of items that can be brought into battle. While the first three are obtained through upgrades, the latter can be purchased using in-game currency earned through matches.
Aside from the online battles, there is a tutorial and a challenge mode in which players must traverse between two places in a certain amount of time.
