After World War I, a mysterious radio transmission that would ultimately be referred to simply as the Broadcast emerges and is responsible for the deaths of many individuals. Two battle veterans make it through the conflict and, for some reason, develop extraordinary intelligence. But one of them, Vladimir Farnsworth, goes insane and decides to use his inventions, such as the robotic beings he calls Monovision Tubes, to disseminate the Broadcast worldwide. Frank Woodruff, the second survivor, designs and builds mobile weapon platforms, Mobile Trenches, to assist humanity in its conflict with Farnsworth.

Iron Brigade is a hybrid video game that combines a third-person mech combat experience with the strategic element of tower defense. You will select a particular Trench model before beginning each mission. Its limbs, as well as the towers, which it calls emplacements. Throughout the operation, you will be in control of your Trench and will be tasked with defending your position while firing at various Tube kinds that will come at you from many directions. With enough scrap collected from destroyed Tubes, you can erect towers with almost no restrictions. These towers will mostly assault your foes but will also assist you in mending damage and collecting scrap. You are rewarded with experience points and new tools, firearms, and armor when you complete specific objectives. In-game currency can be used to purchase particular items in a shop, although the most potent weapons are more often than not discovered on the battlefield. The entirety of the game may be played in cooperative mode with up to four people.

The publication of Trenched in Europe was held up because there were some trademark concerns over the original name. When it was eventually made available to the public, it featured a brand-new survival gameplay mode, new weaponry, and a few other goodies. This was also patched into the version of the game released in North America.
