Once upon a time, the witches served as unseen guardians, directing humanity through the murk while remaining concealed in the shadows. However, humankind unearthed, persecuted, and ultimately put them to death because it could not comprehend their function. Those who have survived only have one goal in mind: to wipe out humanity. Gretchen is the only witch who has expressed a desire to assist humankind. The only way forward is to stop the other witches’ activities by any means necessary.
Another participant, Heinrich, had a previous life as an executioner. He carried out his dreary work during the worst of the witch hunts. As a consequence of this, he became doomed to live forever. To make amends for his actions, he makes a blood pact, known as the Knight’s Contract, with Gretchen, in which he swears to protect her. In exchange, he will be freed from his pain once their mission has been successfully accomplished.
The player’s character in Knights Contract, Heinrich, is immune to death; if he takes too much damage, he will fall apart and have to piece himself back together; however, Heinrich’s companion, the witch Gretchen, is still mortal, and must be safeguarded. Knights Contract is a 3D hack-and-slash game with a twist: the player’s character cannot die. Heinrich can call on Gretchen for assistance with various magic spells, and he possesses a gigantic scythe capable of a wide variety of lethal moves. Heinrich can earn new equipment while playing the game, and Gretchen’s magic to be improved by spending souls won by the game’s adversaries.
