Left 4 Dead 2 occurs one week after the original game’s events and three weeks after the first outbreak. Instead of following Zoey, Francis, Louis, and Bill on their trip from the original game, the player now controls Coach Rochelle, Nick, or Ellis. They arrived at the evacuation location a few minutes too late and must now fight through infested America’s south-eastern region to the following designated evacuation point.

Since Left 4 Dead, the primary gameplay has remained unchanged. The player is still looking through the eyes of one of the survivors as he fights his way through hordes upon hordes of zombies with his three teammates. Instead of fighting mainly in the dark, most of the content in the five campaigns takes place both in the open and in daylight. This also helps a new feature called weather effects. The third campaign’s second section is centered on a powerful storm striking a little settlement on the outskirts.

The survivors’ new adversary is not merely heavy rain. The zombie horde was also expanded with the addition of three new special infected: Charger (a smaller version of the tank), Jockey (he jumps onto a teammate and moves him away from the group), Spitter (spits deadly acid in front of the player’s feet), and a new class of common infected: the uncommon common infected. They have the same fundamental characteristics as regular zombies but have extraordinary power. The clown, for example, draws a swarm of zombies, yet the riot police officer is impervious to frontal damage.

Weaponry has been extensively expanded to combat new and old foes. Aside from additional rifles, pistols, and shotguns, the game now includes melee weapons such as a chainsaw, a guitar, and a baseball bat. A laser sight that can be utilized to improve weapon accuracy is also new, as are two types of special ammunition. In addition, the Boomer Bile can now be launched at foes, turning the rampaging swarm against them.

Once again, multiplayer is divided into multiple modes. Aside from cooperatively completing the missions and playing survivors and special infected in Versus mode, players can select the Survival, Scavenge, and Realism modes. Survival confronts players against wave after wave of adversaries, with the only purpose of surviving as long as possible. Scavenge asks players to collect fuel canisters to power a generator while the opposing team, dressed as unique infected, attempts to stop them. Realism Mode is a type of coop-play for die-hard zombie slayers. There, the stakes are significantly higher. The zombies can only be destroyed with a headshot, the witch has become a one-hit-one-kill weapon, and a downed player is dead unless revived with the shock paddles. The last option, Mutation, requires the player to play a game with modified rules. Every week, the regulations are altered. The player may have to complete the game using only M60s or play Survival with Versus.
