The Dark Lord Sauron fashioned the One Ring over two thousand years ago to control the other rings of power bestowed upon the races of Middle Earth. Sauron was defeated in combat by Isildur, the human king, who refused to destroy the Ring and seized it for himself instead. The Ring eventually fell into the hands of Frodo Baggins, a young hobbit from the Shire. Frodo soon realizes that the only way to destroy the Ring is to hurl it into Mount Doom’s lava river, where it was made. Thus starts a long and deadly journey that will determine the fate of Middle Earth.
LEGO The Lord of the Rings follows Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring on their journey from Hobbiton to Mount Doom. It is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, but Peter Jackson’s films heavily influenced it. The character’s appearance and the story’s presentation are based on the three films: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. This installment of the Lego World games contains spoken dialogues within its funny narrative.
Instead of a center, like in many Lego games, the game’s core is the actual map of Middle Earth, where the player’s party travels from town to town and region to region to explore, fight foes, solve riddles, and uncover treasures. The player must go through story levels throughout the main tale, using each character’s unique powers and equipment to complete the level. After completing a group, it can be replayed in Free Mode to find extra riches and objects required to accomplish various missions (provided by NPCs in the World Map) using unlocked characters. Many treasures are Mythril blocks, which can be used to make tools that any character on the world map can utilize. This eliminates the need to switch between characters all the time. Solving various riddles will also open feelings to obtain quest-giving NPCs and red blocks that will make some “extras” available.
