Lips: Number One Hits is the second game in the karaoke series, and it essentially expands on the principles from the first title but with a new set of songs. This title only includes songs (all master tracks) that have reached the top of the global charts. While a video plays in the background, players must sing along with the lyrics on the screen using a microphone to fill empty bars and pitch and timing lines to get it right. Accuracy is rewarded with points. This generates a meter that can be used to trigger a Star Scream. When it’s ready, tilt the microphone, and all lines are filled with stars. You can then fill in the blanks with your voice. The points are utilized to create a leveling system and medals that may be obtained. Instead of the original video, another style of visuals can be exhibited, and the voices can be reduced further. The menus have been updated, but the in-game mini-games remain the same.
There are three game modes: solo, VS, and co-op. A second player can join the game by shaking the microphone. When your avatar (or a silhouette if you don’t have one) appears between verses, the motion controls are also utilized. They demonstrate a move, such as moving their hands in the air or playing the guitar, and you must imitate it. An identical procedure must be followed when a tambourine or a maraca shows on the screen. You move the microphone as if it were an instrument. Players using a standard controller can still enter the game and generate noise contributing to the song or disturbing other players. Custom song import via USB is also still supported.
The majority of the DLC from the original game is transferable, and when a save game from the original game is identified, the songs can be imported by swapping the disc. However, the original disc must be reinserted after each track. The game has a wireless, motion-sensitive microphone and a redemption coupon for a free five-song pack from the Lips store.
