The Japanese role-playing game Lost Odyssey is a turn-based affair designed by Hironobu Sakaguchi. Novelist Kiyoshi Shigematsu was responsible for the dream sequences in the game. The immortal Kaim, who has already lived for a thousand years but has lost his memory, is the character that the player controls. He needs the help of his pals to travel the world to remember everything and discover who is responsible for his amnesia. The player can investigate many locales, interact with diverse characters, and research and use various objects. The plot of the game is revealed in a series of cutscenes that play out as the player advances through the game.
Lost Odyssey, in contrast to most modern JRPGs, uses tried-and-true game mechanics from older titles, such as random encounters and battles in different places. The acquisition of skills is the foundation upon which the game’s combat system and character progression are built. Mortal characters can only acquire class-based skills as they progress through the game’s leveling system, whereas immortal characters can learn any skill from objects and human natures; however, they are required to equip skills in particular slots. The game was distributed on a total of four DVDs.
