In 2013, almost all humanity was wiped out by a catastrophic conflict, and the Earth’s surface became a nuclear wasteland. Moscow’s few survivors took refuge in the city’s subway tunnels. Even underground, though, human culture continued to evolve in predictable ways. Factions arose, and ideologically opposed groups of passengers occupied stations and entire lines. War raged on a much smaller scale, compounding the strain of living in virtually impossible conditions, dreading the dark underground tunnels that housed horrific monsters.

Artyom was born a few days before the world’s end but was reared underground. He had never left the relative safety of the Exhibition, Moscow’s northernmost metro station, where he shared a home with his stepfather. Everything changes, however, when a soldier named Hunter arrives at the station, warning the residents of a mysterious gang of beings known as the Dark Ones. When Artyom believes Hunter will not return from his mission, he resolves to take the tunnels to the central Polis station and seek assistance there.

Metro 2033 is a first-person shooter with survival horror elements based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Russian novel. Most of the game takes place underground, but Artyom will have to travel outside on many occasions into the endless nuclear winter. Though locations may be explored more fully for goods and ammunition, game progression is straightforward. A few on-rail sequences, missions involving defending a site from an onslaught of creatures, and others are among the setpieces. Several stages can be done invisibly.

Mutants and hostile humans are the game’s antagonists, and Artyom can deal with them with a range of weaponry, including an AK-47, sniper rifle, automatic shotgun, and others. The player can only carry a sidearm and two primary weapons at any given moment. Dynamite sticks and knives complete the kit. All firearms have many versions, including sights, silencers, and other modifications. While upgrades cannot be acquired separately, previously enhanced weapons can be purchased at stations in exchange for the old weapon and strong military-grade ammo, the game’s only money. If Artyom is hit, his health slowly regenerates; however, medkits can rapidly heal him and enhance his regeneration rate for a few seconds.

Artyom must wear his gas mask when traveling on the surface or through poisoned areas to survive. The gas mask’s filter wears down over time (as seen by Artyom’s particular watch and heavy breathing) and can even be destroyed in melee encounters, straining the filter even more. Artyom also has a pair of night vision goggles, a flashlight, a light meter, a lighter, a diary with a compass, and a charging device. When the torch and night vision goggles’ batteries run out, they must manually recharge them. On the other hand, the light-meter assists Artyom in determining whether he is hidden in the shadows, allowing him to avoid certain risks.

Seeking abnormalities and odd, perhaps lethal visions are also environmental risks. These visions have a role in the game’s plot and moral judgments of Artyom’s behavior in situations involving hostile human organizations. The game will go to one of two possible endings, depending on your decisions.
