After a nuclear war ravaged Moscow, the few survivors fled the radioactive surface and sought safety beneath the city’s massive subway system. Artyom is a young man who defeats a mysterious race of beings known as The Dark Ones, liberating his home station and, eventually, humanity itself and gaining the renowned title of Ranger. Despite this, the Metro continues to wage war on mutants and political factions such as the Neo-Nazi organization The Reich and the Communistic Reds, and peace remains a pipe dream for the innocent people trapped in the tunnels. Reports show that a Dark One has survived the missile strike aimed at its type. Artyom meets the Dark One through a series of circumstances and finds that things may not be as easy as they appear.

Metro: Last Light is a post-apocalyptic horror first-person shooter based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Russian novel Metro 2033. It serves as a new chapter in the Metro story and is the sequel to Metro 2033. Like its predecessor, the game is a story-driven shooter with extensive stealth components. Artyom can carry up to three firearms at once, but bullets are scarce and precious enough that higher-grade bullets are the Metro’s money. Stealth is advised when dealing with armed opponents, and ammunition should be saved for the many mutant monsters found in combat. In various scenarios, the player can select between direct shooting and stealth and lethal or non-fatal enemy takedowns.

The game takes place in two settings: the Metro and the Surface. The Metro is made up of habitable stations and mutant-infested tunnels. Each Metro station is unique, and the player will see and visit many of them throughout the game, both hostile and otherwise. The surface is a dangerous region that requires the protagonist to wear a gas mask to survive, making it critical to locate corpses and containers to scavenge for gas mask filters. If the show begins to crack and break, the player must obtain another one, or Artyom will die. The surface is riddled with poisonous hazards and mutants, some of which can pick Artyom up and drop him from enormous heights.
