MotoGP 08 is the sequel to THQ’s motorcycle racing game MotoGP ’07, and it includes the entire legal MotoGP, 250cc, and 125cc classes, based on a 5-year arrangement with Dorna Sports that offers Capcom international rights for all hardware platforms.
After a brief instructional race in which the game assists the player in determining the optimal driving model (Arcade, Advanced, or Simulation), he can select from various game modes, with the career mode as the game’s focal point. There, the player creates a character, chooses a bike and helmet for him, and begins racing in the 125cc class to reach the top of the MotoGP class in under five years. After each successful race, the player not only unlocks new content but also earns career points, which may be used to increase the bike’s maximum speed, acceleration, braking ability, or traction.
Other game modes include* Time Trial – Beat the time records on the various tracks.
- Create a driver or select one from the 2008 season to compete in a series of races.
- Tasks – To access other game material, the player must complete 50 lessons divided into seven categories. Staying over a set speed limit for a predetermined amount of time or winning a 1on1 on the final few meters of a race track are challenges.
The game also has a multiplayer option for up to 12 players (the PS2 version does not). It is the first in the series to be released on the PlayStation 3. The game features the new Indianapolis track in the United States and night racing on the Qatar circuit.
