Skira is a beautiful tiny island in the Pacific Ocean just north of Japan that has historically been at the center of many conflicts due to its strategic importance. Unfortunately, beautiful beaches and a clear blue sea aren’t the only things Skira offers. Following WWII, the Russians took control of the island and discovered a massive oil reserve comparable to the Middle East’s. No one cared at first, but as China’s economy developed, so did their oil needs. Then came the recession. China’s manufacturing industry was, particularly hard hit, and civil unrest intensified, drawing the country closer to civil war. As a result of the riots, the National People’s Army protecting the Russian border, led by General Zhang, was placed on high alert, heightening tensions between China and the world community. As Russia prepared for the worst-case situation, General Zhang unexpectedly stormed Skira, declaring the island China’s lawful historical property. Because Russia is too preoccupied with preparing for a probable battle with China on the ground, they request aid from the United States in restoring control of the island. Soon later, UH-10 Black Hawk helicopters are spotted above Skira, and one carries the player.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a military simulation emphasizing action. For the invasion to proceed, the player must navigate through the mission zones in a traditional first-person shooter mode and complete various objectives, such as blowing up a generator or taking down anti-air-guns. However, because realism is critical in this game, the player cannot simply walk up to the enemy base and shoot everyone. Instead, he and his three squadmates must adopt diverse stances, such as crouching and crouching, to move from cover to cover in different formations and consider before firing a bullet, or in other words, the player must use a tactical approach to avoid dying in the high grass. To that aim, he has a radial, context-sensitive menu from which he can issue specific instructions to his teammates.

Furthermore, at the start of each mission, the player can adjust the weapon load-out of each teammate (and himself) to match the situation. The armory is limited to real-world weapons such as the MK16 MOD 0 Assault Rifle. If all the stealth doesn’t work and combat breaks out, the player must keep track of his blood and hurt levels. His capacity to maintain his weapon straight lowers depending on where and how seriously he has been wounded, for example, his arm. Furthermore, each wound causes the player to lose blood; if he loses too much blood, he will lose consciousness, and the mission will end.

There are various multiplayer modes in the game. The players can choose to take on the entire campaign or just one mission, or they can engage in “Destruction,” comparable to Team Deathmatch, or “Infiltration,” in which the minor team must complete an objective. In comparison, the larger group must prevent it from destroying its target. Unlike the single-player campaign, where players only have limited access to vehicles such as jeeps or helicopters, the multiplayer selection is substantially more extensive. It includes everything from a HUMVEE to an AH-1 Cobra helicopter. The PC version also comes with a robust map editor.
