At the end of Overlord: Raising Hell, things didn’t go well for the Overlord. Despite defeating the last boss and claiming hell itself for his massive kingdom, the Jester once again thwarted his ambitions, dooming him to be locked down there forever. But was the Overlord indeed defeated? Not at all. He may be gone (for the time being), but he has left something behind his son, the Overlad. He was smuggled to the frozen lands of Nordberg and raised in peace until his evil tendencies manifested and the Empire discovered him. He tried to flee but slipped into ice water and died from hypothermia. But don’t worry: Minion-master Gnarl has found a new master, and after 50 years frozen solid, it’s finally time to exact revenge on the Glorious Empire and its commanders.

Setting up business in the Netherworld this time, the player assumes control of the Overlad from a third-person perspective to recapture the territories. He has access to four types of minions to assist him with that task: browns, reds, greens, and blues. While the Browns excel at melee combat, the gardens resist poisonous gas, and the Blues can swim. This helps the player overcome the many hurdles in his path, such as angry elves and legion troops or burning roadblocks that the Reds can only remove. Again, the minions gain power by collecting helmets and other items from dead adversaries or shattered chests. The Overland can also gain strength by discovering new spells, armor, and weapons and forging them in exchange for a minion sacrifice in his tower. The ability to resurrect fallen but valued minions, as well as the ability for minions to ride horses like wolves, giving them access to new talents like jumping over hurdles, is new this time around. Also new: at some moments, the Overlad can assume direct control of one of his minions, allowing him to enter previously inaccessible regions.

The game also includes a multiplayer mode for two players that can be played over LAN, WAN, or even on a single machine, where they can either work together to survive wave after wave of enemies or kill a very powerful Centurion, or fight each other and win by collecting enough gold or killing the different Overlord enough times.
