Alis fought the ultimate evil millennium ago in the original Phantasy Star. The planet Motavia in the Algol solar system is no longer an antlion-infested desert: humanity has built a sentient computer dubbed “Mother Brain” that can govern the planet’s environment, transforming it into a thriving utopia. Rolf, a young Moravian government spy, awakens in his bed one night after having a nightmare. He sees a young girl fighting a demon but cannot assist her. Soon after, he discovers that hazardous bio-monsters have escaped from the laboratory and is dispatched there to retrieve a recorder that may hold crucial information about the horrible incident…
Like its predecessor, the game is a turn-based Japanese RPG with randomly spawning foes. Eight people can join the mission and be swapped at any time to form a four-person combat team. Characters can equip a wide range of weapons, including firearms and dual wield. Different characters learn various methods at different levels that require “TP” (technique points, which are analogous to magic points in other games). Unlike the first game, Phantasy Star II uses the same top-down view for movement and dungeon exploration; the now-2D dungeons are famous for their complexity.
