The successor to Portal, Portal 2, features the same first-person puzzle-platform gameplay. In the second game, players take on the role of Chell, the young woman who destroyed the artificial intelligence computer system GLaDOS in the first game. She was held in stasis following the first game’s events before being reawakened. The sequel is still set in Aperture Science Labs, but it has been taken over by deterioration and nature. Chell ventures outside the clean test rooms and into the dreary industrial backdrop of the laboratory, much more than in the first game.

The gameplay, like in the first game, revolves around portals. Specific uncrossable gaps can be bridged by blasting a starting and ending portal at compatible surfaces. There are various test chambers, just like in the original game, where puzzles must be completed by employing cubes, turrets, platforms, and unique portal methods to get a lot of speed. GLaDOS reappears to tease Chell, and she plots retribution for her devastation, although several twists change her function significantly from the original game. Wheatley, a little robot who unlocks doors for Chell and gives funny observations about the environment, assists her.

Light bridges, laser redirection, and paint-like gels are new gameplay components in the sequel, thanks to the efforts of the student project Tag: The Power of Paint. Gels increase speed, provide a jump, or mitigate the effects. They can also be employed with other items like cubes and turrets.

The game’s two-player cooperative option is entirely new, with its campaign with its own unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters (Atlas and P-body). The PlayStation 3 version includes several Steamworks toolset aspects, allowing cross-platform gameplay versus PC users.
