Prototype 2 is the sequel to Prototype, an action game set in an open-world environment. At the end of the original game, protagonist Alex Mercer managed to kill the Blacklight virus that had infected him and given him unusual abilities, but he was presumed dead. However, fourteen months later, another outbreak struck New York City. The city is dubbed New York Zero after the third pandemic in history. James Heller, a sergeant on an Iraq tour who receives phone calls from his wife, Colette, is the protagonist of this game. She is concerned for her and their daughter Amaya’s safety as new rumors of an outbreak emerge. Mutated people and beasts are roaming the streets again, and the Blackwatch group reappears to suppress the spread forcefully. When Heller returns home, he realizes that both are dead, and he rejoins the army to battle what is now known as the Mercer virus, as Alex Mercer first reappears as an opponent in this game. However, Heller is soon infected by a strand of the virus and gains the same abilities as Mercer. He is hauled in for testing by Gentek but eventually escapes and runs to Mercer, who informs him that Blackwatch and Gentek are the actual perpetrators of the virus. Following the introduction, the leading game begins when Heller decides to follow Gentek while communicating with a priest named Guerra.

The game occurs in New York Zero, separated into three zones based on infection rate: red, yellow, and green. That means Heller can freely walk among regular civilians if he does not flaunt his abilities. There is a primary storyline with objectives to complete, but there is also much room for exploring. He will eventually be able to hack into the military grid Blacknet, which records all military activity. Instead of being told to complete quests, he can choose his assignments in pursuit of the organization.

Heller, like in the previous game, possesses magical abilities that allow him to sprint on buildings, make massive leaps, and land without receiving any falling damage. He can lift objects and characters to toss them at adversaries and perform numerous battle skills with his hands and claws. He can also steal a cannon from a tank and use it as a weapon. Tanks can be driven as well. Grabbing foes now initiates a short fighting sequence that can be utilized for intimidation, optionally followed by a throw or character consumption. He may just as easily infect them with the virus and turn them into bio-bombs. The original game also has the ability to shapeshift and take over a person’s body and memories. He can shake off pursuers, momentarily adopt the position of a soldier and utilize guns, or use it for infiltration if he does this without being spotted. Heller learns new evading skills, heals and regains endurance over time, and has access to a sonar sense that spotlights buildings or people to help him track them down. A top-down map can also be used to view the environment. Heller’s talents are further defined by several upgrades throughout the game, which provide him with new abilities. They are classified into four categories (powers, skills, abilities, and mutations) and a general evolution level based on experience. Tendrils that sprout from Heller’s arm and are used for various purposes give rise to an entirely new set of abilities.
