Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, like its predecessor, is a mash-up of various genres. At its heart is a match-3 puzzle game in the vein of Bejeweled. The gems the player must match in Galactrix have been altered to hexagon shapes, allowing for diagonal matching. In addition, additional gems are added from the side where the user previously removed a rock, making the gameplay much more intricate.
The game’s backstory is set in the future, and the player has access to a massive galaxy map to explore. Each star system has planets, asteroids, jump gates, and space stations. The player must accept tasks that advance the story, but they can also conduct side activities such as mining for raw minerals that can be sold for variable values in each solar system.
Throughout the game, the player can collect many side characters that bring small games, such as building devices for the player’s ships or hacking leap gates to access new locations on the map. However, the fundamental gameplay is upon battling other spaceships. Successful battles yield additional information (the equivalent of experience points), which aids in leveling up the player’s hero and enhancing their stats.
