Hasbro’s strategy board game Risk has been reimagined as an electronic game called Risk: Factions. The gameplay of this version of the game has been reduced from that of the board game to make it more efficient. The gameplay is based on the set of rules that were released for the boardgame in 2008. Still, additional features, such as overkill (more significant damage when rolling two or three 6s – two removes four units, and three removes them all), specific faction powers (to use a fourth die in particular circumstances), and dynamic terrain, have been added to the rules.
The game’s objective is for each player to control a distinct area of the board, and they must both protect their territory and attack the part of their opponents. The winner of the original board game is the player who first controls all of the environment on the board. The resolution of battles is determined by each player taking it in turn to roll the dice, to weaken their opponent with each successful roll. After the combat, possession of the land is awarded to whichever side still has units operational. However, in Risk: Factions, the individual who completes three objectives and maintains control of his capital at the end of the game is declared the winner of the single-player game. You must conquer a specific territory and seize a predetermined number of power plants to accomplish the objectives. The name given to this particular kind of play is the Command Room. Players gain stars (which represented cards in the original game) for each territory they successfully control. These stars can then be exchanged for new troops on the following turn. You can only gather a maximum of two stars on each turn.
Classic Risk is an adaptation of the traditional board game Risk that can be played digitally. Players can control one of five distinct factions, including Humans, Robots, Cats, Zombies, or Yetis; each has its particular commander. The single-player campaign is broken into five chapters, and completing each one grant access to a new section. Numerous new maps are built specifically for use with Factions, in addition to the board game’s original map, which can be played. The game supports both offline and online play for multiple players simultaneously. If you want to play a game with five players, you can do so online with as many as four others. Again, you can play offline using the traditional Risk rules or the new Command Room format. You may also play in a four-player game, in cooperative mode, or on your own against others.
