Rock Band 3 is the third installment in the main Rock Band series, adding many additional elements to the original game. Players join a band (of up to seven players) and perform a song together utilizing guitar, bass, drums, vocals (solo or harmonies), and, new to this game, keyboard. Players can improve their scores by collaborating. Each player can fill a power bar by performing particular sets of notes. When they get enough of these, they can activate “Overdrive,” which adds an x2 multiplier for each player who has Overdrive enabled at the same time (having four people with Overdrive on, for example, will reward you x8 rather than x2 for only one person).

Vocal harmonies, first introduced in The Beatles: Rock Band, debut in the main Rock Band series. Up to three players can perform on the microphone, with one taking the lead and the others providing backing vocals. Players can win double or triple points by staying in sync with one another, depending on how many players can keep up. The game also introduces a new “Pro Mode” style of play for each instrument. For those looking for an even more significant challenge, Pro Mode is more accurate to actual devices – guitars have multiple buttons on the fretboard, players must strum strings, drums must have the three cymbal attachment, and keyboards have even more keys used so that the performance is much closer to actual play.

The game’s Career Mode has also been updated for this release. Rather than grinding for money to acquire new stuff, the game is focused on “goals” similar to Achievements. Each task you complete makes you admire your band more and frequently unlocks new attire or instruments. All songs are immediately unlocked, allowing those who wish to play for fun to do so, while those looking for a more in-depth experience can take on the “Road Challenge” mode, which has you traveling to different places and playing song sets. Each star earned for a song is converted into “Spades” at the end of the performance, and the more Spades you win, the more goals you unlock, which results in even more admirers and goodies. Bonus Spades can be obtained by continuously deploying Overdrive, executing note streaks in the spotlight, or deploying Overdrive when whole and completing note streaks at the start of each song.
