SkyDrift is a plane racing game with gameplay similar to Slipstream 5000. Players pilot an aircraft through various environments with three racing types: Power Race to be the first to cross the finish line using power-ups, Speed Race without power-ups but with speed rings to gain extra speed; and Survivor, in which the aircraft trailing the pack is eliminated until only one remains.
The primary Campaign mode gradually unlocks various tracks, skins, and aircraft. There is a tutorial and seven stages, each further broken into separate races. With obstacles, events, and shortcuts through the natural surroundings, the racing locations provide freedom. In addition to the standard steering controls and an additional acceleration button, a boost is the most essential factor in winning the race. The limited amount is slowly replenished, but the player can gain more by eliminating opponents and executing acrobatics such as flying low toward the earth. Turn the plane into a vertical knife edge position to the left or right for sharper corners. When a plane crashes or is destroyed by an opponent, it respawns after a brief cooldown.
Power-ups can be obtained during Power Races. Guns, missiles, mines, shockwaves, shields, and repairs are among them. Up to two can be collected at any time, and they can be cycled between. Instead of deploying power-ups, they can be turned into additional boosts. They are advanced to the next level when they order a second power-up of the same sort. The game supports up to eight players online in standard and team deathmatch races. Using repair and shield during a team deathmatch affects surrounding teammates.
