Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action game based in the criminal underworld of the Hong Kong Triads. The player controls Wei Shen, a Chinese-American police officer who returns to his childhood neighborhood in Hong Kong to infiltrate the Triad organization Sun On Yee. In the first scenes, he swiftly reconnects with his old friend Jackie Ma, who introduces him to Triad boss Winston Chu. Even though many characters remember Shen long ago, he must work his way back up. In the primary plot, he is assigned numerous missions for the organization, beginning with essential extortion missions with local merchants. These objectives must be completed to unlock additional missions and explore new city areas, but a role-playing element allows Shen to forge his route. Three sorts of experience points are available: Triad, Cop, and Face. Based on his acts, the first two decide Shen’s allegiance to the Triad or the police. The third is a system of comprehensive experience that determines Shen’s global reputation. Leveling up unlocks new upgrades via a skill tree system. Players can abandon the plot and explore the city at their leisure.

The game incorporates numerous elements popularized by the Grand Theft Auto series. The city is teeming with people, each with its schedule, and the player can intervene. Shen can buy or steal automobiles, join a fighting ring, gamble, visit clubs and marketplaces, participate in illicit races, follow police case missions or conduct deliveries for the Triad, wager on cockfights, or do karaoke or general favors for the citizens, in addition to the main story. Shen’s repertoire of maneuvers allows him to sprint, climb, vault, and slide while on foot, with short slow-motion sequences for stunning deeds. Chase sequences frequently combine unscripted activity with staged sequences. Melee combat is essential, as Shen may fight numerous opponents at once. Players can use a martial arts fighting method to chain punches and kick into massive combos and a cover and blocking system. Attacks can be launched by bashing opponents’ heads into walls or kicking them in a phone booth. Almost any vehicle, including cars, boats, and motorcycles, can be stolen. Guns are also present and used during car chases and cinematic movements in which Shen jumps from one moving vehicle to another. On the other hand, firing weapons emerge later in the game and are employed sparingly even then. The ranged weapons combat system incorporates cover mechanics, free fire, and targeting particular body areas on foot.

Shen can find a girlfriend, go shopping for new clothes, and obtain his apartment. Phones are the primary means of communication. Health regenerates independently but can also be repaired by purchasing food and drinks from street vendors. Money collected can be used to buy new melee combat moves. Shen, as a police officer, can hack security cameras and spy on others. Hacking is accomplished through a mini-game similar to Mastermind but with numbers rather than colors. A mini-map in the bottom left corner helps the player keep track of essential landmarks and objectives. Shen wakes up in a hospital with some wealth removed after dying during a mission.
