During a battle with the supervillain Mysterio, Spider-Man shatters the Tablet of Order and Chaos, causing a schism between the Marvel realms. Madame Web then approaches Spider-Man and informs him that she has communicated with three other Spider-Men from three separate realities, informing them that they must work together to recover the tablet’s fragments to restore balance to the realms. Spider-Man comes in four different forms:
- Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Man is most famed for his iconic red and black spider outfit. He uses his webbing abilities to take down foes. Resides in the Fantastic Universe.
- Noir Spider-Man: This Spider-Man lurks in the shadows of 1930s New York City in black and white. His skills lie in the use of stealth tactics and the use of shadows to his advantage. He is a resident of the Noir Universe.
- Spider-Man 2099: In an attempt to murder him, this Spider-Man of the future had his DNA combined with a Spider-Man. This bestowed upon him a slew of futuristic abilities in a lot governed by crooked companies. He lives in the year 2099.
- Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition This Spider-Man is the youngest of the three, dressed in the deadly purple symbiote outfit. The suit grants him incredible power in the fight against evil. Is a resident of the Ultimate Universe.
Each Spider-Man employs unique talents to save their universe from harm. Completing combination tasks in the Web of Shadows unlocks new skills and power-ups. Fighting is accomplished by punching and kicking opponents. Webshots can blind enemies, and particular strikes can defeat them. Each universe has four Marvel Universe supervillains to be fought, all building up to a showdown against Mysterio. Characters such as Sandman, Green Goblin, and Hammerhead are among the baddies.
There are also choices for seeing character bios, concept art, and cutscenes from the game. Each Spider-Man has three different costumes to choose from.
