Split/Second is a television show about vehicles, devastation, and explosives continually looking for new contestants. They hire the player to be one of the eighth drivers and possibly the next champion for the twelve episodes of the next season. It is a racing game with fictitious names inspired by real-world vehicles. Instead of racing around the racetrack and attempting to be the first to do so simply by driving better, everyone gets access to a power play bar. The three portions of the bar fill up by performing drifts, drafting (operating in the slipstream of another car), jumping, or evading an active power play. While the first two triggers two level one power plays, complete out the third unlocks a level two power play.

If a segment of the bar is filled, the player will see an icon above the cars in front of them when they are in the range of a power play. These power plays include a helicopter dropping explosive barrels, a parked automobile designed to explode, and more extensive occurrences like a train bridge going up in flames or an entire ship sliding to the side. The first two are level one power plays, while the following two are level two power plays. When you activate a level two power play, the track changes. Once the ship has been blown up, the typical route is obstructed by fire, forcing the drivers to take the ship’s deck as an alternate route. There are also frequent shortcuts on the course that are unlocked by expending a level one power play and then closing a few seconds later, crushing anyone foolish enough to pursue the player (or whoever opened it). The purpose of using these power moves is simple: to ruin the opponent by allowing him to crash into things or by shaking him up so much that he loses control of his car and crashes himself. Of course, the gamer must exercise caution. He, too, can become engrossed in his power play, losing his advantage and, in many cases, the entire race. Much of the driving is focused on drifting through bends and carefully throttling to maintain the drift. Long drifts are also the most efficient way to replenish the power play bar.

Aside from the standard races, the game includes several modes, such as Destruction, in which the player must race to the finish line as quickly as possible. At the same time, every power play on the track is automatically triggered. In Air Strike, the player must avoid missiles fired by a helicopter flying ahead. Air Revenge takes this further by letting the player return those missiles to their original location. There are also Time Trial events, in which all power play is automatically triggered, and Elimination events, in which the last driver in the pack is eliminated from the race after a certain number of time intervals.

Throughout the campaign, the player earns credits based on where he finishes an event. By accumulating credits, the player can access each episode’s final event, an elite race, and new cars. In addition, by performing insane things like winning a race by a split second, the player unlocks unique decals. Each episode also includes a bonus event that must first be opened by wrecking a particular number of automobiles in the other events.

The game has a split-screen option for two players and online multiplayer for up to eight players, with three different game styles available.
