Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a role-playing game for the Xbox360 system that was released exclusively for the system. Although the story is shared, the Playstation 3 version, Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, published a year later, is a different game due to its additional material and features.

The plot occurs before all previous games in the series – Stardate 0010. During a world war, the Earth is pummeled with nuclear bombs in the opening cinematic sequence. Survivors have been forced to dwell below because the surface has grown toxic in the aftermath. To rescue our species, a choice is made: humanity must find a new home. As humanity’s “last hope,” Space Reconnaissance Force troops are dispatched into the “star ocean” of deep space in four vessels.

Edge Maverick, the main character, begins as a crew member but quickly rises to the captain of the S.R.F. ship, the Calnus, which the player will command. The boat features various compartments for crafting items, “Private Action” between characters, and choosing the next journey destination.

Edge and his companions will visit over six planets, explore towns and dungeons, and meet friendly and hostile alien races. Edge’s gathering will include some of the aliens. Real-time exploration, character interaction, discussion, and team-oriented combat are all available. The multiple cutscenes can be skipped, and the game can only be saved at specific locations on the map.

When a conflict begins, the player can control which character. Depending on the player’s advancement in the game, the party can have up to eight individuals, although only four can engage in combat. During the battle, each of them has unique abilities. Some prefer melee attacks, while others prefer launching projectiles or throwing spells. The new B.E.A.T. system (conflict Exalted Action Type) can easily change fighting techniques to suit the contest. Customization options include blindsiding rivals for guaranteed critical hits and equipping talents for an advantage over opponents. There is also auto-targeting, which can be altered manually if the incorrect opponent is auto-selected.

The game engine utilized in Infinite Undiscovery has been updated for this game.

The North American release included computer-generated (C.G.) images and English-language speech. On the other hand, the Japanese version had more classic anime graphics and included Japanese speech and text.
