A new triad gang is known as the Golden Kane is gaining prominence in Hong Kong and is publicly threatening the Dragon Claw, the oldest and most powerful clan, with its leader James Wong. Billie Wong, his daughter, had a relationship with a cop and became pregnant with Teko. The Zakarov Syndicate kidnaps both of them one day. Inspector Tequila is the name of the cop that got Billie pregnant. He is an experienced Hong Kong cop who does not always follow the rules but has the right intentions. When a cop is kidnapped (and executed) by the Golden Kane, Tequila begins an investigation against Captain Ed Lee’s orders.
You play Tequila and find the cop killers and unwittingly assist the Dragon Claw because of Billie and her daughter. However, the endeavor is not easy because hundreds of adversaries stand between him and his goal, which usually consists of defeating a boss or blowing something up.
Tequila has access to machine guns, shotguns, grenades, rocket launchers, fists, and trusty Enforcer (dual-wield pistols) to cope with all those evil men. This, however, will not be enough. Tequila also has access to Tequila Time and Bomb, giving him the ultimate advantage.
In Max Payne, Tequila Time is analogous to Bullet Time. It slows down time, allowing Tequila to react more quickly. It can be enabled manually or automatically if you perform a jump or interact with your surroundings. To provide cover, you can slip over tables, roll around on carts, rush up stairwells, and kick over tables.
The Tequila Bomb consists of powerful moves such as a Health Boost or a Spin Attack (white doves included). You can fill your Tequila Bomb Gauge by finding hidden Origami Cranes or earning Style Points.
Style Points are awarded if you kill your adversaries using a Tequila Time maneuver or utilizing your surroundings. Style Combos allow you to not only fill up your Tequila Bomb Gauge faster but also multiply your Style Points. These Style Points can then unlock various concepts from the main menu.
You also participated in Mexican Standoffs because John Woo had such an impact on the development. Opponents in these surround you, and Tequila takes them on individually, but he can only lean left and right to dodge the incoming bullets.
There is also an online multiplayer mode with statistics in the game. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are the two possible game styles for up to six players.
