The arcade game Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a special edition of the game Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. Character sprites and backgrounds have been tidied up, and gems now have an element and a visual impact to match.
The primary gameplay remains the same as in the original game: players drop gems of various colors into their Tetris-like bin in groups of two as quickly as possible. If the player places a glowing colored orb next to a gem of the same color, the ball and all identical colored gemstones break, and any gems above fall. The player’s goal is to have this happen numerous times for each block put, resulting in ‘combos.’ The more Counter Gems (gems with timers) that are tossed into the opponent’s bin, the larger the combo. When a player arranges multiple gems of the same hue in a square or rectangular pattern, they merge to form a single giant rock, increasing the number of Counter Gems that fall on the opponent’s field. Occasionally, a player will obtain a diamond; placing this on a colored gem will destroy all gems of that hue in the player’s bin, expanding the possibilities for combos even more.
HD Remix, like Super Puzzle Fighter II X for Matching Service, provides a variety of gameplay variations:X-Mode:* This mode is identical to the original arcade mode.
Y-Mode: When three same-colored gems are lined horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, they break.
Z-Mode: Gems rise from the bottom of the bin, and the player rotates them and creates combos with a 2×2 cursor.
The new X’-Mode (or X Dash-Mode) in HD Remix is a more balanced version of the original game. The distinctive block patterns of many characters have been re-adjusted to level the playing field.
