The Maw begins with the crash landing of a cosmic bounty hunter spaceship on an alien planet. The sole survivors are the affable foreign Frank and the blobby-like creature Maw (the universe’s deadliest organism). Maw enjoys eating things, and he absorbs the characteristics of anything he consumes, allowing him to grow indefinitely. Frank and Maw must now flee from the bounty hunters after them.
The Maw is a 3D third-person action game in which the player controls Frank directly. Frank discovers an electric leash early in the game, which he uses to control Maw’s movement and interact with the surroundings. The player’s main objective in the game is to feed Maw till he develops. There are numerous species in the gaming environment that Maw can provide. Maw will begin with cute small pink blobby critters and progress to larger and larger species to consume.
Some foods Maw consumes grant him specific abilities to progress in the game. Early in the game, for example, there are fire lizards that, when eaten, allow Maw to breathe fire. This new skill can then burn down trees that impede routes.
Some portions of the planet are inaccessible to Maw, so Frank must perform platform hopping to assist her. He may then drag and throw food to Maw using his leash. He can even use the leash to push impediments out of his way.
