Tower defense is the focus of the video game Toy Troops, which takes place on small World War I battlefields populated by “living” toy troops. To stop waves of foes from robbing their fortified toy box, the player takes charge of packs of ancient armies developed by the made-up Signal Toy Company of Bothell, Washington. These armies are of German and British origin. There are 24 missions for the single-player game, and a multiplayer versus mode can be played locally or online.
Players can earn money in the game’s single-player mode by eliminating charging enemy troops, ranging from ordinary infantry to wheeled cannons and even massive Tsar tanks. After that, the money is utilized to either construct new defenses on designated build pads or upgrade existing ones. As the game goes on, both the number of adversaries and the variety of types of enemies will drastically rise. In the setting with the highest level of difficulty, the artificial intelligence that controls the defenses is disabled entirely, and the player is required to switch through and shoot each one manually.
The defenses consist of machine guns, mortars, artillery, and even turrets that shoot poison gas at the enemy. Barbed wire is also used. The player can take direct control of these defenses at any time, allowing them to aim and fire with greater precision while exercising better judgment over which charging unit poses the most significant danger. When the player takes control of a particular team, that unit will exhibit different behaviors, such as the ability to direct mortar projectiles manually. In addition, players can pilot airplanes to combat opposing air forces or take control of sniper towers to eliminate infantry from a distance.
Players must continue constructing and maintaining defenses to safeguard their toy box when playing in versus mode. Still, they must also spend their income on units to attack their opponent. Players can choose which teams will make up their next wave by pressing the Y button, but they do not have direct control over their assault like they can with their defense towers.
