The Fall of Cybertron takes place after the events of its predecessor, with the Autobots and Decepticons still at odds. After destroying Trypticon, the Autobots slowed Megatron and his Decepticon troops’ onslaught, but they now face a new problem.

Cybertron is fading, and the Autobots, headed by Optimus Prime, are powerless to preserve it. They must leave their home to find a new world to live in. They have secretly built a gigantic ship called The Ark and are now preparing it for flight. Unbeknownst to Optimus, the Decepticons are aware of their plans and are plotting their escape, which they will try to thwart at any opportunity as both sides fight for survival.

The gameplay is similar to War for Cybertron in that the player can utilize their Transformer to traverse the level and use their ability to change into vehicles to proceed through the stage as they see fit. Throughout the game, the player can utilize Energon collected from slain adversaries to purchase weapons and upgrades from Teletran 1 kiosks. The health system now has regenerating shields, similar to Halo, and each Transformer the player employs has particular characteristics, such as the ability to be invisible (i.e., Jazz), which the player may use to aid advance through the level.

Unlike War for Cybertron, where the player can pick which side to play, Fall of Cybertron offers a single campaign with chapters that depict the story through the eyes of either the Autobots or the Decepticons, and at times their encounters intersect. To mention a few, the user can take control of Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, and even Grimlock. There is also multiplayer, which includes the usual Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes, as well as Conquest and Capture the Flag variants with class-based characters that the player can customize by gaining experience points. Escalation is a “Horde mode” in which up to four players confront waves of progressively harder adversaries.
