Flames of Judgement, a new installment in the Vandal Hearts series, tells the story of teenage orphan Tobias Martin as he joins forces with his classmates to defend his hometown against a rival kingdom. The novella serves as a prelude to Vandal Hearts.
The series’ signature isometric fighting returns, this time in 3-D with 3-D character models. Players strive to position themselves strategically to obtain an advantage over stronger (or more numerous) opponents. Combat occurs in rounds, with each side moving one character per turn. Each party member can carry two weapons and switch between them without losing a “turn,” allowing them to quickly go from a sword to a long-range bow, for example. Characters earn levels through successful battles and improve their skills with a specific weapon or spell by utilizing it in combat.
Many battles go beyond combat by incorporating a puzzle element, ranging from pushing boulders to protecting people from attacks. As missions develop, their goals may be drastically revised. In addition to the basic game, numerous endings and “secret maps” can be unlocked over the normal levels.
