Aside from the main world, there is a parallel dimension known as the Veil. Himmler’s Paranormal Division is aware of the Veil. It has constructed multiple portals in Isenstadt to allow them to go from one world to another, giving them an advantage in the battle for Isenstadt. To enter the Veil, however, a specific medallion is required; else, the trespasser will turn into a monster upon his return to the actual world. Furthermore, the pendant bestows particular abilities on the wearer. The Office of Secret Actions cannot allow the Nazis such access and dispatches their best agent, B. J. Blazkowicz. Despite his success in stealing the medallion, the Nazis are already on the verge of being able to build such a medallion in the lab. B. J. cannot stand by and enters the fight.

Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter in which the player must blast his way through hordes of various varieties of Nazis, ranging from regular soldiers to ninjas. Players can access different traditional WWII weapons, such as the German MP40 or K98 rifle, to deal with the enormous number of attackers. In addition, he discovers the medallion and gains four new abilities during the game. While initially simply allowing him to see adversaries more clearly and use bizarre flying animals as bombs, he can eventually halt time, surround himself with a protective shield, and strengthen himself. However, The medallion’s powers deplete its energy, which must be replenished in power spots practically invisible in the real world.

After completing each assignment, the player can explore Isenstadt, speak with NPCs to obtain new objectives, and visit the Black Market. The levels contain intelligence material and gold. While the intel provides extra insight into the story and its characters, the gold is used to purchase new guns, ammunition, and weapon enhancements like silencers or more prominent magazines on the Black Market. They are collecting intel, and gold grants access to further improvements.

There are other class-based multiplayer modes for up to twelve players. The possible classes are Soldier (who shoots first and asks questions later), Engineer (who can complete all tasks), and Medic (who can heal and resurrect fallen teammates). Team Deathmatch, Objective, and Stopwatch are the available multiplayer modes. In Objective, the Resistance must destroy Axis research and experiments without being stopped. The goal is the same in Stopwatch, except the time it takes the Resistance to halt the Axis is timed, and after the round is over, the team’s trade sides. The opposing team must be faster than the first to win the game.
