Zombie Apocalypse is a dual-stick shooter in which the player must survive zombie waves throughout 55 stages/days. Saving stranded citizens, killing zombies with environmental hazards, or simply mowing down the hordes with ten weapons, including machine guns, flamethrowers, shotguns, and chainsaws, earns you points. Up to four people can battle the undead online or offline.
Players select one of four distinct characters, each with their quips and attributes. The continually spawning hordes are mainly slow and mindless. However, new varieties emerge as the game progresses, such as giant zombies that are more resistant to gunfire and zombies that carry (and shoot) guns. As the zombies approach, they grasp hold of the player. A few can be shaken away, but any more will knock the player down and kill them.
The ammo for collected weapons is restricted, whereas the primary machine gun never runs out of bullets. Similarly, each fighter carries a chainsaw that can be utilized to carve through closing zombies or in a slower “execution mode” for extra points.
Zombies can be herded or coaxed away using a talking pink teddy bear as “zombie bait.” Survivors occasionally emerge from spawn places throughout the map and wave for a helicopter. If you can keep the zombies at bay long enough for a rescue, the survivor will reward you with a point bonus and a new zombie bait bear.
