There was a city a thousand years ago, and the town was buried one day. A new village was built on top of the old one, and all that remains of the old one is a door. This is the origin of the phrase “thousand-year door.” Nobody knows what’s behind this door, but everyone has their theories.
Princess Peach discovers a map and mails it with a letter stating that Mario must appear. So Mario travels to Rogueport, where Peach was last seen. He meets a female goomba named Goombella there. Mario shows Goombella the map. Mario is then taken to her archeology professor by Goombella. Mario is born to the thousand-year door by the professor. The map begins to show the locations of stars that open the door when Mario stands in front of it. From here, the adventure begins.
Mario can jump, run, hammer, talk to people, etc. On his quest, Mario meets a lot of interesting people. Battles take place in front of an audience on a stage. Mario must please his fans in battle by carrying out action commands (hitting buttons at the right time during his attacks). During the war, the crowd will occasionally throw objects at Mario; at this point, the player may attack the group.
