With the success of the previous action game genre, LJN continued to release Jaws in 1987. The task of the player is to move through the ports. Different to find and destroy a great shark at the end of the game.
At the beginning of the game, players will be provided with a boat to start the journey at sea. They will observe the number of points they have and the fuel level of the boat on the screen. While moving, players will be hindered by dangerous creatures and complex terrain. The ship will automatically change to submarine form when colliding with a complex terrain on the map. Under the seafloor, players will destroy some creatures such as jellyfish, rays, and sharks. Destroying them will help them collect bonus points. However, when encountering some large creatures such as sharks, the player will have to move to avoid colliding with it. It will become aggressive if the player deliberately attacks it. This will make it unsafe for players to perform missions.
Players can collect some items that appear when they are on the ocean floor such as crabs, starfish, and conch. The crab will help the movement speed of the boat faster. Bonus points will increase when a player picks up starfish. Conch is used as an in-game currency. When the ship moves to the next port, players will have a short time to buy items such as fuel to increase the power of the boat and bullets to attack the enemy. Players are also provided with a signal receiver device upon arrival at the second port. This device will help them locate great sharks. It will signal beeps when it detects an enemy.
Before the dangers when moving, the game offers players a plane when encountering dangerous enemies. When the shark is detected, it is necessary to activate the aircraft. The plane will appear and drop the rocket under the water and destroy the enemy. The number of missiles in the aircraft is limited so players need to use it properly to counter attacks from enemies. After passing certain ports, the beeps of the receiver will sound continuous. Upon hearing this sound, players need to carefully look at the map to find the last great shark. It can attack and destroy players as they approach. They need to make sure the remaining ammunition and missiles are enough to destroy it. The player will combine the aircraft’s rocket attack with consecutive rounds of bullets from the boat that will kill this shark. The game ends when the player destroys the last shark.
