The Gradius ReBirth video game is a part of Konami’s ReBirth series for the Wii, which also contains throwback installments from the Castlevania and Contra video game brands. This game, like the other ReBirth titles, is a throwback to the 16-bit era, and it takes inspiration from various Gradius titles, including the Nemesis and Lifeforce titles. However, unlike the other ReBirth titles, this game is not a remake of an older game.
Story
At some point during the “Gradian Year 6664,” the planet Antichthon, a part of the Gradian Empire, goes completely silent. People who name themselves the Bacterians have managed to take control of the mother computer of Antichthon. At this point, the Gradian government decides to launch an assault against the Bacterians using James Burton and the Vic Viper.
Gameplay
The Vic Viper, a spacecraft constant throughout the series, is now again available for players to pilot as they engage in side-scrolling shoot-em-up stages against hordes of dangerous aliens and enormous bosses. The weapon upgrade mechanism has been preserved completely, as is customary for this series. There are two distinct gameplay modes and five different ships, each with unique stages. There is a mode called Standard Gameplay and a mode called Score Attack. In the former, players have an unlimited number of continues available to them, whereas, in the latter, they only get one chance to rack up as many points as possible. A public online leaderboard is also associated with the Score Attack mode.
In addition to an online scoreboard, Gradius ReBirth allows users to record and watch back their games.
