Mario is on vacation in Dinosaur Land when he discovers that King Koopa Bowser kidnapped Princess Peach Toadstool. When Mario begins his hunt for her, he finds a massive egg with a dinosaur named Yoshi hatching from it. Yoshi informs Mario that Bowser’s minions have imprisoned his fellow dinosaurs in eggs. The brave plumber must journey to their castles, rescue the dinosaurs, and eventually confront King Koopa, forcing him to release the princess.

Super Mario World is a platformer that jumps and runs, and it is the sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3. The gameplay is similar to previous iterations, with fast-paced platforming in (mainly) side-view stages crowded with varied opponents and traps that must be completed within time constraints. Mario gets access to his standard power-ups, such as the Super Mushroom, which makes him more significant, and the Fire Flower, which allows him to launch small fireballs at adversaries. The Cape Feather is a new power-up: when wearing it, Mario may spin to attack foes and fly as long as the player can maintain his balance in the air. Another new feature is the ability to ride Yoshi, a dinosaur that can eat foes and gain special attacks from some of them. It is occasionally essential to physically pick up and carry items (e.g., keys) and use them in proper places to open particular areas.

The game’s globe is divided into numerous main zones, each with several stages. Outdoor scenes predominate; however, there are multiple underground and underwater levels. Every central region contains at least one ghost home, which usually features more intricate traps and ghostly non-destructible foes. To go to the next section, the player must usually visit a castle (a more challenging stage with more difficult foes and dangerous traps) and fight the boss enemy guarding it.

Many stages have hidden exits that lead to optional areas such as fortresses with recurring boss enemies, interconnected Star World stages, and Switch Palaces, which allow the player to materialize specific colored bricks in all locations, gaining access to power-ups and other secrets. Other dinosaur types with various skills, such as breathing fire or flying, may also gain entry to remote regions.
