A cell-shaded action video game set in the setting of feudal Japan has been developed by the team that brought you Viewtiful Joe 2 and is being published by Capcom’s Clover studios. The story of Ōkami recounts the adventures of Amaterasu, a wolf-goddess, who is tasked with thwarting the plans of an evil monster known as Orochi to take control of the beautiful world of feudal Japan. Ōkami takes the well-established cell shading technique and transforms it into a picture reminiscent of a Hokusai-style Japanese woodblock print.
Amaterasu is equipped with a paintbrush that the player can use to destroy monsters, build bridges and wind, and return the forest to its pristine natural state. This is done so that the player has the impression that they are playing in a painting. When an enemy is defeated, the world regains color, and the natural life force regenerates slowly. During gameplay, players can bring up a canvas to create artwork using the heavenly brush. New abilities and techniques are acquired as you progress.
Your mission in Ōkami is to bring the thriving forests and diverse creatures back to their former splendor, and the game is full of vast landscapes and dungeons for you to investigate. Amaterasu faces various foes, including epic boss fights, on her way to achieving her objective. If she assists the people she encounters along the way, she will find that many of them are willing to help her achieve her goal.
