Aerospace technology has connected the world by introducing fast jets, high-flying airships, and enormous flying fortresses. The occupation of Skygunners has emerged due to air piracy and other threats. They are frequently hired as half freelancers and part mercenaries for their daring aerial skills. Ciel and Copain are two such Skygunners who are vacationing in Rive. Rive’s police chief appoints the two gunners as protection for the town’s scientific expo and his agent Femme to the group. When the criminal scientific genius, Ventre, arrives with his gang of devoted Poulet doll-henchmen, what appears to be a simple babysitting assignment quickly turns into an adventure. As Ventre plots the theft of the Eternal Engine, a perpetual motion machine capable of powering his creations indefinitely, Ciel, Copain, and Femme must take to the sky to stop Ventre’s intentions.

Skyscanner is an action-packed third-person air combat game. Players can play as Ciel, Copain, or Femme, each with their narrative, distinct flying abilities, and exceptional skill. Players can control the plane by turning it up, down, left, and right, performing barrel rolls, using afterburners, and breaking. Weaponry is managed by a complicated targeting system that includes two types: “Look Targeting” and “Weapon Lock.” Look Targeting simply places a specific adversary in the center of the camera and may be changed at any time. To fire on an adversary, the player must still maneuver close to them and target them using the crosshairs. Players can roll the crossings over the wing leader of an enemy group or the sequentially lead cannon on a battleship, allowing them to instantly target multiples from that group, depending on the secondary weapon they choose.

Each plane’s primary weapon is a machine gun that fires straight ahead. More lethal secondary weapons, such as Fireworks Missiles, which cause area explosions, Dog Missiles, which slow and paralyze targets; and Cross Missiles, which adhere to targets and must be detonated by a machine gun. Copain has his weapon, the Pumpkin Bomb, a giant devastating bomb. These secondary weapons are automatically replenished when chains of foes and combos are destroyed. Chains and combos are also used to trigger score multipliers, which increase the amount of money won in each mission. Ciel, Copain, and Femme constantly compete throughout the game, and benefits (such as faster engines) are frequently awarded to the character with the highest score in particular tasks. Specific mission events also result in bonus points.
