The previously peaceful kingdom of Duhan has been turned into a chaotic wasteland due to a lightning strike that tore through the night. After this burst of lightning destroyed the area, thousands of people were slain, the kingdom was utterly decimated, and now just a few people are left. The principal city is cut off from the rest of the world and exists in an eternal state of freezing temperatures. Reports have shown that the Queen of Duhan has been seen entering a massive maze below the castle. It is up to the game’s protagonist, together with whichever allies he chooses, to investigate the labyrinth of Duhan in search of explanations and ways to undo this tragic predicament.

Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land is remarkably similar to earlier Wizardry games, despite its development in Japan. The large, labyrinthine 3D dungeon is one of the game’s locales, and the other, the village, is where the player can recruit new individuals into their party, relax, and buy supplies. Mostgame consists of exploofng the dungeon, trying to find your way around the labyrinth, gathering treasure, setting off sequences, and engaging in turn-based battles with enemies.

In this game, players can play as one of eight character classes: Warrior, Priest, Thief, Sorcerer, Bishop, Samurai, Knight, or Ninja. Party members are chosen from the characters of various classes; some of these characters even have backstories. Some courses will not join a character unless they have completed a particular number of dungeon runs or have a certain amount of experience overall.

Participating in a minigame that requires repeatedly pressing a pattern of buttons within a set amount of time allows thieves to open chests and deactivate traps. This can be done inside the context of the game. Magic requires memorizing a predetermined number of spell units at each level. The player can build a stone that can be used to improve spells by gathering the necessary components and bringing them to the shop.
