Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter is a 2D fighting game and the first to feature characters from both the Marvel comic universe and Capcom’s Street Fighter series. It is also the first Capcom game to feature tag team combat, where a player can request the assistance of a different character at any time.

The player can only control one character at a time during the two-on-two duels that make up a match. The second character may be summoned periodically or during an attack. While waiting, the character off-screen also gains some health. The match must be won by both opposing characters, and when one dies the other is automatically called in. Variable Attack, Variable Counter, and Variable Combination are introduced in the tag team options, allowing two characters to work together to attack, defend, or execute a special move.

With the addition of Rogue, Gambit, and Sabretooth, X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes already featured the majority of the X-Men cast, including Cyclops, Storm, Juggernaut, Magneto, and Wolverine. The Street Fighter characters are Ryu, Ken, Cammy/Chun-Li, Charlie, Zangief, Dhalsim, M. Bison, and Akuma from Street Fighter Alpha 2. Apocalypse is the game’s final boss.

The tag team feature is absent from the PlayStation version, which instead uses the more conventional best-two-of-three round format.
