Lufia – Idura’s Revenge is a German RPG Maker 2000 game created by Sölf. It is a fangame of Lufia 2 – Rise of the Sinistrals and is a direct sequel. The full version was released in 2007, an update with the “Retry Mode” completed in 2013 and a “Hardcore” version was released in 2016.

The game picks up 20 years after the events of Lufia 2. The player takes control of Jeros, the son of the two protagonists Selan and Maxim from Lufia 2. Like his father, Jeros is perfect with the sword and travels from country to country to find his own destiny. On his journey through the world, he meets allies and old enemies who are after him.

The game makes use of many aspects of Lufia 2:

Enemies in dungeons are visible (but always move, not only when the hero moves, as was the case in Lufia 2)
There are many different puzzles in the dungeons
Spells can be purchased in cities and taught to characters
Some items teach characters abilities when equipped
The majority of the game takes place within the dungeons and can therefore almost be assigned to the Dungeon Crawler genre.

Retry Mode:
The retry mode originally comes from Lufia 2. There, however, the only difference was that opponents left behind four times the amount of experience and money. In Iduras Revenge, this mode is more like a NewGame+. The following things are different in Retry Mode or have been added to both modes:

There are several new enemies, spells and items, some of which have been made available in both modes.
A second optional dungeon has been added to the game and is available in both modes.
Each non-optional dungeon has been increased by an average of 2 to 5 maps. Extrapolated to all dungeons, that’s about as many new maps as 2 to 3 other dungeons.
The final dungeon has been expanded by a part with completely new enemies, a boss and 9 maps.
Each dungeon now has a boss fight.
Each dungeon also got an additional optional boss fight.
In each dungeon, some enemies still appear, which in the original version only appeared in the following dungeon. In the repeat mode, the player can already meet bees in the North Cave (Dungeon 2), which actually only appear as regular enemies in the North Tower (Dungeon 3).
All bosses have been strengthened slightly.
There are some modified story sequences.
There is a new final fight.
Because of the many changes, the game in retry mode is heavier than the original version, but also more in line with what Sölf originally intended to do with the game.

Note: the only version where Retry Mode isn’t enabled from the start is in the German one not marked [Hardcore] as that is the one from 2013. In that version you must finish the game once to unlock it.

Hardcore Version:
This increases the difficulty level significantly and is based on the Lufia 2 romhack Kureji Lufia. Apart from that, nothing else has changed. The notable changes are:

The stats of all enemies and bosses have been significantly increased.
There are several new enemies, spells and items.
The item drops of all enemies and bosses have been reworked.
Some bosses can now perform multiple actions per turn.
Note: there is no easy version of the English one since the hardcore one was the one they chose to translate.

In order to play this game without EasyRPG you’ll need the RPG Maker 2000 RTP package which can be installed from the provided setup. Run the game from RPG_RT.exe if you don’t plan to use EasyRPG. A soundfont based on Lufia is included and can be used with EasyRPG (or an MIDI Mapper such as VirtualMIDISynth if using the main .exe) although in the English version most of the music is in .wav format. The music being wav is why that version is so much bigger in file size.
