Assassin’s Creed: Rogue is the eighth main game in the historical series. It is the follow-up to the previous year’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It also serves as a precursor to Assassin’s Creed III, while the final task is a prologue to Assassin’s Creed: Unity, published concurrently. Most of the gameplay and design are comparable to Black Flag’s sandbox setting since the game blends land exploration with ship-based naval exploration and warfare.
The protagonist is Shay Patrick Cormac, an Assassin recruit with a rebellious spirit. He eventually becomes dissatisfied with the order’s tactics. He joins the Templars as a fearsome Assassin Hunter, making it the first title in the series to have you control a Templar for most of the game. Many characters from the previous games, including Adéwalé from Freedom Cry, return. The typical modern-day sequences return as well, this time as a new employee at Abstergo Entertainment tasked with exploring Cormac’s memories amid a server crash. The game occurred during the French and Indian War in the 18th century. The main areas in the game are New York, the River Valley, and the North Atlantic Ocean. The latter environment’s ice offers additional game features such as frozen cargo, icebergs used as cover, and an ice-breaker ram to open up routes. Cormac’s health is harmed by swimming in freezing water, and there are no underwater missions like in Black Flag. Morrigan, his ship, is smaller and can navigate through rivers. There are also new weapons, such as ignitable oil barrels. Puckle cannons are introduced, ships can be rammed, and attackers can board the Morrigan during ship-to-ship combat. The sea shanties are back, combining classic and new songs.
On land, regular missions resume. Air rifles and grenade launchers are new weaponry. Fighting mechanics have been changed to allow for counterattacks based on timing rather than holding a button down. Because many of Cormac’s opponents are Assassins, they employ familiar tactics against him, including flying strikes, hiding in bushes, and blending in with crowds. Gas is a new form of weapon that Cormac can avoid by putting on a mask. Narwhals and polar bears are two new creatures to hunt. Passive money can be generated by renovating buildings in the three primary locations. Certain areas must be liberated by taking on gangs that rule them. There are numerous treasures and side tasks, as in previous games. There is no multiplayer mode available.
