It is Halloween, and to meet new people and make new friends, the siblings Wern and Reynold, who are new to the area, are going trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. The game gives the player a choice between the two, and whichever one they pick will remain safe while a hostile neighbor takes the other. The objective of the journey is, as one might think, to save your sibling or sister.
The role-playing game that is Costume Quest has turn-based battles. The game leads you from home to house, where you knock on doors and ask for candy while using the strength of your costume to fight off monsters you encounter inside some places. There are around a dozen of them, and each can convert the wearer into a different creature, such as a vampire, a robot, the Statue of Liberty, or anything else. The battles are fought through the coordinated pressing of buttons, similar to how Mario RPGs work. Gaining experience using a standard point-based system allows players to level up faster and improve their combat abilities. Additionally, “combat stamps,” which is the name used in the game for boosts to the player’s ability to fight, can be gained through the game’s side tasks (such as finding items or assisting the people in the neighborhood) and the candy is used as the cash to purchase these stamps.
